A NATIVE CHILD TO THE OUTSKIRTS?

A NATIVE CHILD TO THE OUTSKIRTS?

That is what the painting is actually called. The artist is Akhmet Kitayev, and it belongs to the collection of the Simferopol Art Museum.

The canvas dates from 1954, yet the mise-en-scène is thoroughly modern. The family scene, familiar to everyone, recalls Squid Game more than anything else: a stout, well-groomed mamma virtuosically directs a raised ladle at her stooped father, aged before his time, to show how much grief he has yet to swallow, though he is already climbing the wall like a cat; the grandmother, with feigned tragedy, laments how much blood this monster has drunk from them all; the aloof daughter stares dully at the wall: how can you fail to understand, Father, that the new iPhone now has an A15 Bionic processor!
