Although interest in Indian modernism is growing, and Tagore's works long ago won international recognition, it is unlikely that his pictures will appear at auctions outside India: as early as 1976 they were declared a national treasure and banned from export.
Incidentally, the Nobel laureate in literature, known above all as a poet and philosopher, Rabindranath Tagore turned to painting only at the age of sixty. I wrote recently about the self-taught American artist Grandma Moses, who took up painting when she was already over 70.
