On coming to power, Napoleon renamed the town of Brienne Brienne-Napoléon, in memory of his schooling

On coming to power, Napoleon renamed the town of Brienne Brienne-Napoléon, in memory of his schooling. The town kept that name until 1881.

In 1814 the Emperor returned to Brienne, the scene of his first childhood battle, and it was here that the first major engagement with the Allies on French soil took place. The Russians put up serious resistance, holding the town, while the French seized the château. Napoleon's army was two thirds made up of raw recruits, yet he managed to defeat Blücher's army, despite our considerable numerical superiority. Still, a couple of days later the French were routed not far from here, at La Rothière.
