I met an English artist who makes surreal artefacts out of hair. At first I took it for a genuine wig from some masquerade and asked her to tell me its story, so imagine my astonishment when the owner of the cake of hair said, "It's an artwork". The young woman is called Jane Hoodles, she lives in London and makes all manner of things out of hair. Human hair? Not only. The artist said that she pays no attention to whether the hair is real or not, but much of the human hair that ends up in her studio is too short. This hair sculpture, which alludes to the cultural significance of hair and hairstyles in the Victorian era, is made with wire, canvas and foam (to give it volume). Only yesterday I was musing on an art project inspired by history, and here the creators come swimming into my hands of their own accord. And do not be surprised if you soon see me with a tower like this on my head
