Do you remember the ending of the 1968 film Planet of the Apes? When the ruined Statue of Liberty appears on screen, we learn that the action is taking place not on some distant heavenly body but on Earth, which has fallen under the rule of cruel and narrow-minded apes after an apocalypse brought about by nuclear catastrophe.

This differs from the ending of the original novel: Nova turns out to be pregnant by Ulysse, flees the planet of the apes, and we understand that humanity still has a chance. Yet when they reach Earth, it transpires that here too, where 800 years have already passed, power over the world has been seized by apes. The second denouement was used in the repeat screen incarnation of the Planet.
