Riccardo Tommasi Ferroni's Supper at Emmaus in the Artists' Church in Rome

Remember the Biblical story of the supper at Emmaus? On the third day after the Crucifixion, Christ appeared, unrecognised, to two grieving disciples, who invited him to share a meal. At supper the sacrament of the Eucharist took place, and the disciples knew Jesus. Caravaggio painted the scene several times. In the church of the artists, Santa Maria in Montesanto on the Piazza del Popolo in Rome, one can see a reinterpretation of the classic canvases by the Italian artist Riccardo Tommasi Ferroni. The action of Ferroni's painting unfolds in the twentieth century: the disciples of Jesus wear jeans and trainers, and the table is covered with newspapers. The canvas has hung in the altar of the Chapel of the Souls in Purgatory since 1981
