Barbie's Friend Midge, 1962 Edition
Barbie's friend Midge, 1962 edition. Midge was conceived as a less flamboyant version of Barbie, with lighter make-up, less showy clothes and the looks of a woman not quite so grown-up as Barbie. The outcome is what you see here: a dame with pursed lips and two wigs in the style of the American housewife's coiffure, wearing a red coat with an astrakhan collar. Midge went steady with Ken's best friend Alan. In 1967 Midge was withdrawn from production and replaced by a doll called PJ, painted up like a drag queen at a Mardi Gras carnival. In 1980 Midge returned with the prefix California Dream, and as for the rest, you will learn it from Greta Gerwig's film.
