Pieter Dirksz, also known as "Longbeard", was a shipwright who earned extra money touring the fairs as one of the attractions. The takings from "viewings" of his beard he donated to the Edam orphanage, which commemorated him as its benefactor in a portrait at the end of the 16th century. The present portrait was painted on the basis of the original in the first half of the 17th century
