Pope Francis Makes Personal Visit to Russian Embassy in Rome Over Events in Ukraine

Pope Francis visited the Russian Embassy in Rome to express personally his concern over events in Ukraine. The Pope usually receives ambassadors and heads of state in the Vatican, so his stepping outside its walls shows the degree of his alarm at the situation that has arisen. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed that the pontiff wished to "express clearly his concern" and spent about half an hour at the embassy. Pope Francis I is calling for dialogue and asks the faithful to observe the coming Wednesday as a day of fasting and prayer for peace in Ukraine. This visit, however, cannot be regarded as a public appeal to Russia
