Pope Francis I, addressing TED, urges us to heed what scientists say about climate change and the need to act now to mitigate it. And, as is his custom, he appeals to our hearts, which fail to notice the suffering of the poorest and least protected amid growing inequality and injustice. Why did this address catch my attention? Because it is frightening to watch how quickly our planet is losing its former appearance, and how swiftly humanity is destroying the unrepeatable grandeur of nature in pursuit of shameful capitalist ideals and consumerist passions. Yet it turns out that we have nothing but the occasional word, unless perhaps something lies somewhere in the depths of the soul
