Monument to "the Most Pious, Most Autocratic, Great Sovereign, Our Emperor Alexander Alexandrovich of All Russia"

The monument to "the Most Pious, Most Autocratic, Great Sovereign, Our Emperor Alexander Alexandrovich of All Russia. 1881–1894", the work of the architect Alexander Pomerantsev and the sculptors Alexander Opekushin and Artemy Ober, was unveiled in Moscow beside the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour on 30 May 1912. Two and a half million roubles were raised by subscription for the monument to Alexander III. It was a very expensive monument. Guidebooks described it in just such terms: as colossal, ponderous, and distinguished by the extraordinary quantity and richness of the material expended on its making. Yet the emperor, turned towards the Moskva River, was not destined to sit long upon his throne: in July 1918 the monument was pulled down.
