It turns out that the original version of the sculpted portrait of Nefertiti had wrinkles. This was shown by a CT scan of the bust carried out in 2006, which revealed a second sculpture carved into the limestone core beneath the plaster.
The inner face proved to be more realistic: Nefertiti is depicted with wrinkles around the mouth and sagging cheeks, fine lines under the eyes and a slight bump on the nose.
Thutmose first carved this realistic bust, and then used thin layers of plaster to make it up, smoothing away the wrinkles and straightening the bridge of the nose, so as to produce a more idealised image of the queen
