Conclave to elect the new Pope likely to begin in the Vatican in early May 2025

Usually a conclave to elect a new Pope is convened 15–20 days after a death or abdication, as was the case with Benedict XVI, the previous pontiff. But in 2013 Benedict XVI granted the right to hold a conclave immediately after his abdication, without waiting the 15 days.

The conclave to elect the next Pope will most likely begin in early May 2025.

Cardinals from all over the world will gather in the Vatican and secretly choose the new pontiff. The right to vote belongs to cardinals under the age of 80, of whom there are currently 138. The conclave will sit in the Sistine Chapel in conditions of strict secrecy until the necessary majority of votes has been reached
