On the Probity of Scholars
In November 1865 Academician Abich asked to be released from the Academy and renounced the title of full member, since at that time he was unable to attend the Academy's sessions and to bear the duties of a member of the conference on an equal footing with the other academicians resident in Saint Petersburg. His obligations to the Mining Department, to compile a geological map of the Caucasus and a detailed geological description of the region, compelled him to remain in the Caucasus for longer than he had reckoned.
One is instantly reminded of today's talk of the quorum, which cannot be assembled because the academicians are absent from meetings.
Incidentally, a year later Abich was elected an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences.
