New monument to the Governor-General of Moscow, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich Romanov, and his wife, Grand Duchess Elizaveta Feodorovna, unveiled in Klimentovsky Lane, beside Tretyakovskaya metro station

The monument depicts the grand ducal couple on the day of their wedding in 1884. Elizaveta Feodorovna wears a bridal gown with a flowing train. Sergei Alexandrovich is dressed in the uniform of the Preobrazhensky Life Guards Regiment, which he commanded from 1887 to 1891.

Sergei Romanov was killed in 1905 in Red Square. After her husband's death, Elizaveta Feodorovna visited his murderer, the Socialist Revolutionary terrorist Kalyayev, in prison and petitioned Emperor Nicholas II for his pardon. She herself later met a martyr's death. In the summer of 1918, Elizaveta Feodorovna was thrown alive by the Bolsheviks down a mineshaft near Alapayevsk.

One can hardly speak of any outstanding artistic merit in the monument by Frangulyan, but it is good that the memory of these people has been commemorated in some fashion at least.
