A few days ago in the English county of Dorset, the 1,300-year-old doors of Sherborne Abbey were broken open and church silver stolen.

The damage done to one of the most significant and beautiful churches in England is estimated at a hundred thousand pounds. Among the stolen items are staffs, a processional cross and a bishop's crozier, but in general a great quantity of silver objects is said to be missing.

For hundreds of years the abbey stood intact and unharmed, but in an era of cultural enrichment from the former colonies it could not hold out, and this despite total video surveillance and control
