The choice of Shirshov and Mikoyan for signs on the House on the Embankment
Opposite the mostly infamous House on the Embankment stand two signs reading "The house where ... lived". One wonders by what principle, out of several dozen outstanding and quite well-known names, it was Academician Shirshov and Mikoyan who were chosen. After all, besides them the house was home to, for instance, the writer Yury Trifonov, to whom we owe the very phrase House on the Embankment. At various times the residents of this famous complex, one of the largest residential buildings in Europe, included Nikita Khrushchev, Demyan Bedny, Alexei Batalov, Stakhanov and Voroshilov, as well as several dozen people's commissars, ministers and marshals, Heroes of the Soviet Union, actors and writers. Many met a terrible fate: more than 700 of the building's residents were repressed. Yet for some reason, from this whole galaxy, it is Shirshov and Mikoyan to whom we are advised to pay attention
