Her military rank during her wartime service in the Second World War was that of lieutenant. In February 1945 she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the women's home-defence units, where she trained as a driver-mechanic of an ambulance and received that rank.
Elizabeth's military service lasted about five months, which made her the first woman of the royal family to serve in the army
