Christie's in New York is to offer Georgia O'Keeffe's 1930 landscape "Near Abiquiu, New Mexico I".

For the past four decades the painting has lain wrapped up in a cupboard in a flat in New York's East Village, and until now specialists scarcely knew of it. The sale takes place on 17 November, and the canvas is estimated to fetch as much as 3 million dollars.

The picture shows Cerro Pedernal near the town of Abiquiu in the state of New Mexico. O'Keeffe painted the landscape a year after her first trip to New Mexico, where she later settled and spent the last decades of her life. It is probably one of three versions of the same view: the second is kept in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, while the third belonged to David and Peggy Rockefeller and is now in a private collection
