Russia's Ministry of Science and Higher Education announces abandonment of the Bologna system of higher education and a transition of universities to an updated one from 1 September 2026

Under the reform, higher education in Russia will consist of three levels:

Basic higher education: study lasts from 5 to 6 years and replaces the bachelor's degree.

Specialised higher education: the master's degree, residency or assistantship-internship, lasting from 1 to 3 years.

Postgraduate study (aspirantura) will be classed as professional education.

Some universities taking part in the pilot project for the transition to the new system will stop admitting bachelor's and master's students as early as this year. Among them, notably, is the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI). Students already enrolled on the old programmes will be able to complete their studies under the previously approved curricula.
