The Metropolitan Museum and the Louvre Prepare “Rembrandt and the Ancients” for New York in 2027 and Paris in 2028
The Metropolitan Museum and the Louvre are jointly preparing the exhibition "Rembrandt and the Ancients". It will open in New York in November 2027 and travel to Paris in 2028. For the first time in more than twenty years, the Metropolitan will show so full a retrospective of Rembrandt.
The exhibition will be devoted to the way the Greco-Roman and biblical traditions shaped the artist's work. More than 125 paintings, drawings and etchings will be shown, from the collections of both museums and from other holdings, together with historical materials of the period. Among the exhibits will be "Bathsheba at Her Bath, Holding King David's Letter" from the Louvre and "The Conspiracy of Julius Civilis" from the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, which has never before been exhibited in the United States. It depicts the oath of the Batavians, a Germanic tribe regarded by the Dutch of the seventeenth century as their ancestors, who rose in revolt against Rome in AD 69
