Marshal Ney was among the last French commanders to leave Russia
Marshal Ney was among the last French commanders to leave Russia. The final day of the French campaign of 1812 is conventionally held to be 14 December, when Ney, at the head of the pitiful remnants of the Grande Armée, some 1,600 hungry, feral, emaciated soldiers, crossed the River Neman at the town of Kovno (Kaunas). To the very last yard of Russian soil Ney was pursued by the detachments of Ataman Platov, who fought the last engagement on Russian territory on the bridge over the Neman. Already on 11 December, on leaving Vilna (Vilnius), Ney had lost both most of his guns and the imperial treasury.
