The risen Christ as a gardener and Mary recognising his voice

The risen Christ as a gardener and Mary recognising his voice

Mary Magdalene Did Not Recognise the Risen Christ and Took Him for the Gardener.

The motif of the risen and unrecognised Christ recurs several times in the Gospel accounts, but it is in the guise of a gardener that the Saviour is at his most enigmatic.

Mary did not recognise Christ at once, but when he addressed her by name she understood who stood before her, knowing the voice of the Saviour. One may recall the words of Jesus about the good shepherd, whose sheep "hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name... and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice."
