Maria Filippovna Limanskaya, made famous worldwide by Yevgeny Khaldei's photograph "The Brandenburg Madonna", turns 100 this year. The image of Maria Limanskaya has become one of the most recognisable symbols of Victory.

In the war Maria Limanskaya was a traffic controller and travelled all the roads of Victory from 1942 to 1945, twice finding herself on the brink of life and death.

She celebrated her hundredth birthday surrounded by her large family in her native village in the Saratov region.
