Jan Keser and Martin Zimmermann's flying cathedral for the bicentenary of the canton of St. Gallen
The Flying Cathedral is a project by the artists Jan Keser and Martin Zimmermann, timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the Swiss canton of St Gallen. The balloon was conceived as a flying advertisement for the canton and its chief symbol, the Baroque Cathedral of St Gallen of the late eighteenth century, which is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The balloon is 31 m high, 15 m wide and 26 m long. So that the Cathedral of St Gall should not be mistaken for St Paul's or some other church, the balloon flew at an altitude of no more than 1 kilometre, from which all the architectural details are clearly visible.
