The year 1964 gave the British royal family four children. On 29 February Princess Alexandra gave birth to James, on 10 March Elizabeth II gave birth to Prince Edward, on 28 April the Duchess of Kent gave birth to Helen, and on 1 May Princess Margaret gave birth to Sarah.

All the babies were delivered by one and the same obstetrician, for whom this photograph was made as a gift: he received a copy, signed by the august mothers, as a keepsake.

The photograph, taken by Antony Armstrong-Jones, Princess Margaret's husband, can be seen at the exhibition of rare photographs of the royal family at Buckingham Palace.
