Queen Camilla Becomes a Doctor of Letters of the University of London

Queen Camilla of England has become a Doctor of Letters of the University of London. The doctoral robe was placed on her shoulders by the Princess Royal, Anne.

True, Camilla is patron of several organisations that maintain and promote literacy, visits schools, libraries and businesses to popularise these programmes, is herself a passionate reader and the founder of a book club, which she promotes with the full might of the royal resource. But all the same it turns out that she was given a doctorate for reading books, going to libraries and talking about it.

It follows that, in principle, anyone at all can become an honorary doctor. Not to mention that the sister-in-law of the newly minted doctor is the Chancellor of the University of London.

Still, this is not the first person very remote from science, teaching and universities, with no connection in principle to intellectual pursuits, to receive an honorary academic title.

All that remains is to resign oneself to it and once more to ask the Lord, should it be His will, to annul all honorary academic titles and degrees, leaving only those conferred on purely academic grounds.
