A kore with pale red braids, yellow earring discs and a headdress picked out in yellow and dark tones is on show at the Royal Ontario Museum in honour of the 80th anniversary of Greek-Canadian relations, brought over from a museum in Athens. This sculpture of the 6th century BC once adorned the Athenian Acropolis alongside hundreds of similar figures. The maiden originally had chestnut hair and a dress of pale orange, gathered at the front, with a blue and white border. The traces of pigment on the statue represent the original colours with which it was painted. Meanwhile, the Greeks continue to press for the return of the marble sculptures removed from the Parthenon in the early nineteenth century by Lord Elgin, and more than ten years ago opened a new museum in which they hope to reunite the scattered treasures of the Acropolis that were carried off to Europe
