Saint Eligius and Saint Godeberta in the 1449 painting by Petrus Christus

When you accidentally get caught in the reflection of someone else's selfie. It is commonly held that the celebrated painting of 1449 by the Netherlandish artist Petrus Christus depicts Saint Eligius, patron saint of goldsmiths, who served as goldsmith to the Frankish king Chlothar II and became Bishop of Noyon in the 7th century, together with Saint Godeberta in the guise of a customer. Eligius holds a ring in his hand, probably a wedding ring, intended for Godeberta, who by means of it was wed to Christ, became a nun and founded her own convent in Noyon. Eligius was known for his honesty, making flawless jewellery from the full-weight lumps of gold supplied by his clients; he won fame as the creator of skilful reliquaries and shrines for the relics of saints, went down in history as the author of the bas-reliefs on the tomb of Saint-Germain, and earned universal love by giving away all his fortune and wealth to the poor.
