A Harlot's Progress

William Hogarth's series of engravings of 1731-1732 describes the typical path of a girl of free morals in the eighteenth century, from procuress to grave, and usually not a very long one at that:

1. Ensnared by the procuress
2. Quarrel with her Jewish protector
3. Arrest
4. Scene in Bridewell Prison
5. Death
6. Funeral

The image of the heroine was inspired by Daniel Defoe's story "Moll Flanders" and by the biography of the notorious prostitute Kate Hackabout
