How works of colossal size are exhibited is more interesting still. Look at the system of blocks and ropes that several workmen used to hang a large-scale painting in the Museum of Picardy a little over 100 years ago. As far as I know, the photograph shows work on The Sound of the Tocsin of 1888 by the French artist Albert Maignan. The dimensions of the canvas are impressive: 5.5 m by 4.5 m. It is hard to tell from the details whether this is installation or removal, but judging by the date, the painting is probably being taken down during the evacuation of the museum in 1918, when a bomb fell on one of the galleries.
