Physical resemblance of Danton and Robespierre in portraits at the Carnavalet Museum
Do you think there is a connection between the very distinctive appearance of two French revolutionaries, Danton and Robespierre, and their personal qualities? At any rate, one cannot fail to notice the outward resemblance of these two figures of the French Revolution in these portraits by unknown artists from the collection of the Musée Carnavalet. I allow for a certain artistic exaggeration, a tendentiousness of sorts in the drawing of the shape of the head, the pinched face and the excessively raised hairline, but on the whole it is even interesting how strangely alike two such prominent and progressive politicians of the age of Napoleon turn out to be.
