More than 600 items stolen from Bristol Museum on the night of 25 September
More than six hundred items have been stolen from a museum in Bristol. Among the missing objects are military memorabilia, jewellery, and figurines of ivory, bronze and silver from the museum's collection devoted to the British Empire and the Commonwealth.
The theft took place on the night of 25 September, but the public learned of the incident only yesterday. According to the city authorities, "given the scale of the theft, it was decided to await the completion of the preliminary investigative measures" (two months' worth!). In addition, the archive staff needed time to check thousands of objects held in the museum's stores and to establish precisely what had gone missing.
