Japanese spider crab at Bexhill Museum in Bexhill-on-Sea and its size
A Japanese spider crab in the collection of the Bexhill Museum in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex. The museum itself is Edwardian in its modesty: it has just two members of staff, and its collection consists of the curiosities assembled by the museum's curator, John Sargent, together with technological devices, costumes and artefacts of the Second World War.
The Japanese deep-sea crab lives in the Pacific Ocean at depths of up to 800 metres. Its body reaches 80 cm in length, and its legs span as much as 6 metres! Yet it weighs up to 20 kg. This crustacean can live for 100 years.
