A group of American scholars has created a 3D model of an eighteenth-century slave ship. Judging by the description, the model is based on the only fully surviving plan of a typical vessel used to transport slaves from Africa. Dr Nicholas Radburn, lecturer at Lancaster University and historian of the Atlantic world, devoted several years to the work.

The model itself is presented as part of a large project on the history of slavery, which contains, among other things, unique databases on the transatlantic and intra-American slave trades, slaving routes, data on the transit of 36,000 slaves, the names of more than 90,000 slaves brought from Africa, and an entire collection of images: https://slavevoyages.org/

In all, between 1500 and 1867 more than 12 million Africans were sold into slavery and carried to the Americas on 40,000 voyages by ships of this kind. A single sailing vessel carried some 600 captives, who were kept in simply appalling conditions.
