Just in Time!

Just in time! A triumphal column is to be erected in Saint Petersburg in memory of Russia's victory in the Great Northern War of 1700-21. The idea of a triumphal column is more than three hundred years old: the first design was drawn up under Peter himself, immediately after the end of the war. Its author was the architect and sculptor Bartolomeo Carlo Rastrelli. But when Peter "rested in God", everyone had far too much on their minds to bother with cumbersome monuments.

The design of the present monument was prepared by the architect Mikhail Mamoshin and the sculptor Stepan Mokrousov-Guglielmi.

The bronze triumphal column, set on a granite pedestal, will be crowned by a bronze figure of Peter the Great 9.5 metres tall. The total height of the structure is to be 82 metres. Something like that could truly only be placed next to the skyscraper of the Lakhta Centre.
