Steel Sphere of 1936 Found During Demolition of a Paper Mill in North Carolina
Giant steel sphere discovered during the demolition of a paper mill in North Carolina
The riveted steel sphere, about 9 metres high and weighing about 40 tonnes, is reported to have been built in 1936. Unfortunately, it was damaged by mistake during dismantling.
The most convincing version suggests that the sphere was built here, on the spot, for storing acid, which was used under pressure in the chemical cooking of wood chips in the production of cellulose.
The sphere is to be preserved in the new development as a curious engineering relic of the past
