The Bar jacket has appeared in every Dior collection, but on this occasion the House's archive invites us to see how the garment changed under successive creative directors: Yves Saint Laurent's Sultan dress of 1958, Marc Bohan's white dress with a black hat of 1966, Gianfranco Ferré's Silence of 1989, John Galliano's woollen dress with jacket of 2008, Raf Simons's trouser ensemble of 2012, and Maria Grazia Chiuri's hooded outfit of 2017.
A splendid exhibition with an excursion into the history of fashion. But in my view it is also a graphic demonstration of how, after the 1990s, notions of the beautiful have been rapidly reduced and the aesthetic demands of society lowered.
