Photograph from the Byron family vault in the Church of St Mary Magdalene at Hucknall. The poet's remains lie in a coffin bearing a small coronet. Beneath it stands the coffin of the previous lord, the Wicked or Sinful Byron, his great-uncle, which in turn rests on top of the utterly crushed coffin of the 4th Lord Byron. Beside the coffin of George Gordon stands that of his daughter Ada Lovelace, and beneath it lies the coffin of the poet's mother. The condition may seem rather sorry for the resting place of a noble family, but do not forget that this is merely a cramped vault beneath a church floor, and the tombs of kings themselves sometimes look no better inside
