European Union confirms cancellation of long-term two-million grant to Venice Biennale Foundation over Russia's participation in the 61st Venice Biennale
The European Union has confirmed the cancellation of a long-term two-million grant to the Venice Biennale Foundation over Russia's participation in the 61st Venice Biennale. The pavilion, meanwhile, was open for only a few days.
The European Commission had threatened to halt funding as early as March, when it was announced that Russia would show a project in its pavilion. The process of reaching a final decision dragged on for almost five months owing to legal wrangling and EU bureaucracy.
The cancelled grant is only a small part of the Biennale's budget, about 2.5% over a four-year period.
