Citroën Lictoria given by André Citroën to Pius XI, the first modern popemobile

Share

This six-cylinder Citroën Licorne was presented to Pope Pius XI by André Citroën himself on the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. The car was fitted out specially for the Pope, and two hundred people worked on the project. For the bodywork, a non-standard burgundy was chosen, with gilded chrome. In place of the rear seat, the Citroën has a veritable throne, and the interior is decorated in the Venetian style of the eighteenth century, which is why this car is considered the first popemobile of the modern type. Now that, I understand, is a present!
After the death of its first owner, the car passed to Pius XII, who used it until the start of the Second World War, when he exchanged it for an Austrian automobile better suited to the political climate.
