The Lansdowne Madonna of the Yarnwinder, a Copy of Leonardo da Vinci's Work, and Its History

Another copy of the Madonna of the Yarnwinder is known as the Lansdowne Madonna, after the English marquesses who owned the painting in the nineteenth century. It was listed among the possessions of the dowager Marchioness of Lansdowne. By the end of the century the work had left the family collection, and for several more decades it passed from one aristocratic collection to another. In the 1930s it was X-rayed, and it was concluded that the underdrawing was indeed by Da Vinci. In 1999 the painting was bought by an unnamed collector. So here is yet another canvas by Leonardo in private hands. Records and discoveries, decidedly, lie ahead
