Another Hermitage Giorgione, likewise acquired in 1772 from the collection of Baron Crozat de Thiers in Paris: a widely known male portrait, regarded until the mid-nineteenth century as a work by Giorgione but subsequently reattributed more than once. The picture has been ascribed to Domenico Mancini and to Domenico Capriolo, the latter with greater probability, and as his self-portrait, dated 1512. Yet there is no single settled opinion on the attribution, whether of the portrait or of the sitter. After all, the supreme mastery and artistic merits leave open the possibility that the author was a more distinguished painter
