The only slap truly worth noticing has nothing to do with the mediocrities of the American pop industry. On 7 November 1968 the German journalist Beate Klarsfeld, known as a Nazi hunter, mounted the rostrum at a congress of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and boxed the ears of the West German Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger, shouting "Nazi! Nazi!" For this escapade Klarsfeld was sentenced to a year in prison pending appeal, which reduced the term to four months suspended. It was not the first time Beate had drawn attention to the Chancellor's Nazi past: earlier, in 1968, she had hissed at him and demanded the resignation of the Nazi during a session of the Bundestag, but security swiftly escorted her from the chamber. Beate's whole life has been bound up with the search for Nazi criminals across the world, and thanks to her investigations retribution has overtaken dozens of fugitive fascists. In 2012 she was put forward as a candidate for President of Germany. Beate is now 83 and a citizen of Israel
