A rather amusing episode concerning Donald Trump's meeting with the Japanese Emperor Akihito, described in Harry Hurt's book "Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump"

The author tells of Trump's business visit to Japan in 1990. If the book is to be believed, the visit began with a dreadful embarrassment: while Trump was in the air, someone spread a rumour that, for some unknown reason, Michael Jackson was accompanying him, and when Trump stepped off the plane alone, the crowds of journalists gathered at Tokyo airport were bitterly disappointed and ignored his arrival altogether.

A string of disappointments then followed for the guest himself: he contracted food poisoning, was disappointed by the food, cursed the accursed raw fish, remained throughout in the same crumpled suit and attended business meetings with great displeasure.

"The first real meal Donald ate in Tokyo was a hamburger for lunch the next day at a Japanese McDonald's. Feeling better, he decided to take a stroll through the Imperial Gardens. The walk inspired him with a new idea. 'Get in touch with the Emperor,' Donald ordered his entourage. 'Tell him I want to see him.' But, like the Japanese journalists at the airport, the Emperor's representative apparently had no idea who Donald was. He informed Donald's intermediary that a meeting could be arranged in a year's time, beginning next Thursday, provided that the Emperor was given a written request stating the purpose of the visit. On Saturday Donald decided that staying in Tokyo was a waste of time."

In the end the meeting did take place, 27 years after the request, but this time in the format of a state visit.
