During his recent state visit to Britain, Donald Trump intended to present King Charles with a gift symbolising American-British military cooperation

The Trump administration approached the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene, Kansas, on the matter. Among other things, the institution's collection holds a sword presented to Eisenhower in 1947 by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. The library, however, declined to hand over this or any other original item, insisting that all the objects are the property of the United States. In the end, Trump gave the King a replica of Eisenhower's officer's sabre from his West Point days.

Soon afterwards, the library's director, Todd Arrington, was obliged to resign on the instruction of the leadership of the US National Archives. Arrington confirmed that he had been asked to leave, the reason given being a "loss of confidence".

The National Archives and the White House declined to comment.
