I have long wanted to tell you about one project of the Museum of the History of the Gulag: colleagues, together with the Memory Foundation, have created a collection of graphic novellas based on the recollections of people who passed through the cauldron of Stalinist repression.
The stories the reader encounters have a piercing force: they are drawn from the memoirs of victims of the corrective labour camps. But it is not only the reality of what is told; the very genre of the graphic novella allows the authors to convey to the modern reader, with the utmost clarity, the scale of the Stalinist repressions. The images on the pages of the collection lodge in the memory for a long time, tear one out of comfortable everyday life, and compel one to reflect on one of the most tragic episodes in the history of our country. A last portrait of a father on wrapping paper, drawn by his cellmate; an arrest for asking whether workers in other countries lived better; a little tin of “Krasny Oktyabr” boiled sweets, kept for a whole lifetime; and other fragments from the stories of the repressed.
