The day of ten-year-old Tsesarevich Pavel at Catherine's court, from congratulations to the ball

I read how His Imperial Highness Pavel Petrovich, the future Emperor Paul I, celebrated his tenth birthday.

The first to congratulate the Tsesarevich that morning was his confessor, the hieromonk Platon Levshin, after which the heir was led to the apartments of Her Majesty, and together with the Empress he went to Mass. After church Paul was taken to Catherine's chambers, where he received the congratulations of foreign ministers, and then returned to his own rooms, where he received the congratulations of his tutors and the courtiers. Having breakfasted lightly, the Tsesarevich deigned to proceed to Her Majesty's dinner table, and straight after dinner went back to his rooms, where he played billiards with his instructors. In the evening the heir went to the ballroom and opened the ball with Countess Marya Andreyevna Rumyantseva, the senior lady of the court. The youngest representative of the dynasty danced with the most venerable lady-in-waiting. At ten o'clock the ten-year-old Paul retired to his rooms and went to bed.
