Henry V, Hotspur and the Battle of Shrewsbury in the Film “The King” and in History
Was the Youth of Henry V Really So Dissolute?
Yet another myth of Shakespeare's making has found flesh, thanks to the efforts of the film crew behind “The King”. Though the prince and his father did indeed have political differences, the future king never renounced his status, nor the privileges and obligations that came with it.
A duel instead of a battle
Henry V did not propose to Harry Hotspur a single combat that would decide the outcome of the decisive engagement, as the film shows. Incidentally, the battle in which this supposedly might have happened is the very Battle of Shrewsbury where the future king was badly hurt and wounded in the face. Hotspur did indeed die at Shrewsbury, but not by Henry's sword.
