The 1415 Southampton Plot against Henry V and Its Version in the Film “The King”

Was There a Plot Against Henry V?

According to the storyline shown in "The King", Henry V is pushed towards war by an attempt on his life by the French. In reality, the plot to assassinate Henry V was uncovered on the eve of his attack on France, when he had already assembled his troops, at Southampton in August 1415. The military operation itself had been in preparation for two years.

The men beheaded in the film, however, are real: Thomas Grey (played by Steven Fewell) and the Earl of Cambridge, Richard de Conisburgh (played by Edward Ashley), who did indeed wish to see his young nephew, Edmund, Earl of March (Mortimer), a descendant of King Edward III, placed on the throne. The French character of the conspiracy was Shakespeare's invention.
